MANILA, Philippines – After taking over major social media platforms for their propaganda work the past years, the supporter base of presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is looking to dominate Twitter as well with the use of mainly newly-created and revived accounts, a Rappler investigation showed.

The hashtag #LabanMarcos trended on Twitter on Monday, January 17, ahead of the announcement by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on petitions against Marcos’ candidacy.

Marcos’ supporters had organized a Twitter party the night before on Sunday, January 16, to make #LabanMarcos trend. One of the accounts known to have started the event was Twitter account @UTLoyalist, created only in November 2021. READ MORE in Rappler

FACEBOOK, TWITTER TOLD: Suspend accounts of Philippine communist leaders

NTF ELCAC: Like Trump’s, also ban CPP-NPA social media accounts

Social media platforms Facebook and Twitter should also suspend accounts of communist leaders in the same way it did to those of US President Donald Trump for ensuing violence to his tweets and instigating the recent riot at the US Capitol.

This, according to the Legal Cooperation Cluster of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF ELCAC) in a statement Friday.

The NTF ELCAC cluster called on Facebook and Twitter platforms to apply with equal rigor the standards of civility to which it held the US President accountable, to the social media accounts of leaders and officials of the Communist Party of the Philippines – New People’s Army (CPP-NPA).

“Like Trump, these cadres of terrorists, on a more regular, systematic, and coordinated manner, sow disorder and advocate violence, with a marked emphasis on recruiting the impressionable youth,” the statement said.

It added that unlike Trump, the CPP-NPA, and its political arm, the National Democratic Front (NDF) does not pretend to be at least democratic or peaceful.

“Theirs is an unconcealed call to arms, waging an unrepentant war of attrition against a democratic government,” NTF ELCAC said.

The CPP-NPA-NDF, it added, care little how much their empty war has a cost in lives and property.

“What matters to them, as long as their leaders are given their pulpits, is that their cult brings in fresh bodies to throw at the standing government,” it said. READ MORE

AFP TO HUNT DOWN TERRORISTS IN SOCIAL MEDIA

“The AFP shall ensure that terrorists will not be able to use social media as means to advance the ends of terrorism, recruit new members, and generate financial support,” AFP chief-of-staff Gen. Gilbert Gapay said .

Gapay said the AFP is sparing no effort to curb terrorist activities and propaganda on social media, during the first in a series of virtual training by the military with social media giant Facebook .

“The AFP views Facebook along with other social networking sites as platforms to disseminate accurate information that would empower our people to see through the lies, and reject terrorist organizations masquerading as pro-people,” Gapay said.

He added that Facebook could be the medium that will help consolidate the peoples’ support to the AFP whose mandate is to protect and defend the state against various threats to peace and security.

“The AFP looks forward to conducting more training with Facebook to better equip its personnel in honing the strengths of social media as a platform to push forward the government’s national development campaigns,” Gapay said. READ MORE
