Rain, rain, go away

Pagasa warns: Stay off river banks

The government weather bureau in Region Eleven has warned heavy rains ahead and advised residents in river banks and landslide-prone areas to watch for signs of calamities.

The Philippine Atmospheric and Geosciences Administration (Pagasa) also sent out an advisory to all disaster councils to set in place an emergency plan as the bureau predicted heavy rains that started last week could stretch out to February.

Gerry Pedrico, Pagasa regional director, said in danger from flashfloods are houses in river banks which could be swallowed by currents and those in landslide-prone areas with history of mass movements.

Pedrico said the Pagasa has advised the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council to warn municipal and city disaster councils of forthcoming heavy rains and ordered to prepare for contingencies.

Pagasa said heavy rains for the week would be triggered by low pressure areas sighted near the Visayas. RMB
