PNP JOINING AFP, COAST GUARD IN PATROLLING WPS VS. CHINA VESSELS

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is joining the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), in conducting patrols in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) against incursion by Chinese vessels.

PNP chief PGen. Debold Sinas on Tuesday said he has directed the PNP’s Maritime Group to deploy its maritime assets and personnel to help patrol and strengthen security in the WPS, part of the country’s territory that China claims .

“The PNP is always in support of the AFP against all kinds of threats to our country. The one in charge there is the Philippine Navy, but we are always ready to give support to help in protecting our rights and claim to the West Philippine Sea,” Sinas said in a press briefing.

The government has increased maritime and air patrols in WPS after the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), filed diplomatic protests against China over the presence of Chinese vessels in the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ), particularly in the Julian Felipe Reef (Whitsun Reef).
