Magnitude 5.3 quake hits Davao Oriental

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolted Davao Oriental on Sunday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported. 

The tectonic quake struck 98 kilometers southeast of the municipality of Manay at 2:23 p.m. It had a depth of 19 kms. 

Phivolcs has not logged any reported intensities in the earthquake bulletin issued at 3:20 p.m.

 Aftershocks are likely, while damages are not expected from the magnitude 5.3 quake. Damage starts at intensity VI based on Phivolcs’ scale. Earlier on Saturday, a magnitude 5.4 earthquake jolted Davao Oriental, with the epicenter recorded 15 kilometers southeast of Baganga. (PNA)

GOV’T AGENCIES PREP UP FOR HIGH INTENSITY EARTHQUAKE, TSUNAMI FOR ‘THE BIG ONE’

The “Big One” is a worst-case scenario of an earthquake from the West Valley Fault, a 100-kilometer fault that runs through six cities in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

A tsunami is also foreseen in the scenario set by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Work is underway to identify in Metro Manila’s neighboring areas the safe open spaces (SOSs) where people can run to and assemble when the “Big One” strikes.

The National Mapping and Resource Information Agency (NAMRIA) already identified and mapped SOSs in Metro Manila and began to do the same for neighboring areas as the West Valley Fault (WVF) runs through six cities in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

A tsunami is also foreseen in the scenario set by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). READ MORE
