Senator urges Filipinos to heed advice from gov’t, medical experts following detection of first case of monkeypox

With the confirmation of the first monkeypox case in the Philippines on Friday, July 29, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go called on health authorities to intensify further their awareness, detection, disease surveillance and containment efforts.

PHILIPPINES has ready response for monkeypox

World Health Organization (WHO) declares monkeypox to be a public health emergency of international concern 

 Refusing to be caught flat-footed, the Department of Health (DOH) and its partners have been preparing for the monkeypox virus ever since an uptick in cases was reported in other countries in May 2022.

Following the declaration, WHO also issued temporary recommendations (TRs) to guide the response of countries around the world that might be affected by the virus.

For countries like the Philippines with no history of monkeypox in humans, some of the guidelines include the following: activate multi-sectoral coordination mechanisms for readiness and response, to stop human to human transmission; avoid stigmatization and discrimination against any individual or population group that may be affected, to help prevent further undetected transmission. Covid-19 TF readies response to

The Davao City Covid Task Force is readying the city government’s response to a possible spread of the Monkeypox Virus – a viral zoonosis or a virus transmitted to humans from animals with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients.

Davao City Covid-19 Task Force Spokesperson Dr. Michelle Schlosser said that the city government is looking at utilizing Covid Cluster Clinics (CCCs) in handling cases. She said the CCCs have been established by the city government not only for Covid-19 but also for other emerging and re-emerging diseases like Monkeypox.READ MORE
