PH approves Bt eggplant’s use for food, feeds

DAVAO CITY – The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Friday approved the use of the Bt eggplant for direct use as food, feed, or for processing (FFP).

In a statement, the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) said the DA’s Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) has issued Biosafety Permit No. 21-078FFP for the use of the Bt eggplant after a rigorous biosafety assessment in compliance with a joint department circular issued by the DA, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Health and the Department of the Interior and Local Government in 2016.Read More

Dispels rumors about being ill

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday night dispelled rumors about being ill, saying he purposely decided to be out of public eye last week because he was busy reviewing and signing papers that involved “agriculture” issues.

Duterte did not elaborate the particular agriculture document he signed, but noted that concerns involving food are vital especially during a prevailing pandemic.

“Nagpipirma ako doon series of ‘yong sa agriculture. Pinag-aralan ko, binabasa ko habang nagsasalita sila dito (I was signing a series of that in agriculture. I was studying it, I was reading it while they were talking). I was really working on the papers trying to find out if it’s not — ah well, not in accordance with law. It must be lawful and you know we have to intrude into so many things. But in times of crisis, we are just about really to ready to embark on something that can help the people especially on the food issue,” he said in a pre-recorded public address.

Reconstituted PCA Board holds inaugural meet

The government representatives of the reconstituted board of the Philippine Coconut Authority held its first official meeting on March 15, 2021. Agriculture Secretary William Dar, the PCA Board chairperson presided over the meeting.

By virtue of Republic Act No. 11524, otherwise known as the Coconut Farmers and Industry Trust Fund Act, the PCA Board is now composed of the following:

  1. Secretary of the Department of Agriculture as Chairperson;
  2. Secretary of the Department of Finance as Vice-Chairperson;
  3. Secretary of the Department of Budget and Management as Member;
  4. Secretary of the Department of Trade and Industry as Member;
  5. Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology as Member; and
  6. Administrator of the Philippine Coconut Authority as Member;

In addition to the above-listed board members, three (3) coconut farmer representatives – one each from the Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, will also join the PCA Board. As provided for in the law, ‘they shall be appointed by the President from a list of four nominees for each island grouping.’ These farmer-representatives will be selected through a nomination and selection process in consultation with their respective organizations or associations.Read More
