House okays new sin tax rates

MANILA, Philippines – The House of Representatives, voting 210-21 with five abstentions, last night approved a bill revising the tax rates for the so-called “sin” products like cigarettes and liquor. Before the measure’s approval, Davao City Rep. Isidro Ungab, ways and means committee chairman and sponsor of the bill, presented last-minute amendments, which some members claimed further watered it down. The amendments changed the rates for alcohol and tobacco products, with some going down and others going up.
