ROBREDO: Calabarzon killing a massacre

“The Filipino people deserve better than this murderous regime.”

A MASSACRE. This was how Vice President Leni Robredo desribed the deaths of nine activists across Calabarzon on Sunday.

Robredo on Monday called for an investigation into the raids. Police said those killed died in the firefight that ensued after the activists fired on law enforcement officers. who were to serve warrants of arrest on the victims.

“There is no other way to describe this: It was a massacre. And it came just two days after the president himself ordered state forces to, ignore human rights, kill communist rebels, and ‘finish them off,” Robredo said.

“We strongly condemn the killings in Calabarzon, in the same way that we condemn the killings of so many innocent people under this administration,” Robredo said.

Our call is for justice. We are calling for a clean and independent investigation to make sure those who should be held accountable will be held to account,” she said.

LAWMAKERS CONDEMN CALABARZON KILLINGS

Part of long-standing policy of Duterte administration .”

Lawmakers condemned police raids in Calabarzon on Sunday that killed nine activists.

In the House of Representatives, Rep. Carlos Zarate (Bayan Muna party-list) called it a “Bloodbath Day by murdering innocent civilians, and by planting evidence for trumped-up cases.”

“This is pure terrorism to brutally silence dissent,” Zarate wrote on Twitter. “Pure terrorism to stop making government accountable.”

Rep. Sarah Elago (Kabataan party-list), said search warrants are now being weaponized to run after activists, labor organizers as well as human rights defenders.

“Instead, [the] Duterte administration’s counterinsurgency campaign has targeted dissenters, organizations and activists opposing the regime’s anti-people policies,” Elago said.

The Senate minority bloc also condemned police raids in Calabarzon on Sunday that killed nine activists.

The killing is part of a “long-standing policy” of the Duterte administration to ignore human rights, the senators said.

The senators called for an investigation into the killings they described as  “high level of disrespect towards basic human rights” by the government.

They linked the carnage to President Rodrigo Duterte’s earlier remarks for security forces to ignore human rights in the government’s counter-insurgency campaign.
