MAY 9 E-DAY SCENARIO: MARCOS IN ONE-ON-ONE FACE OFF WITH LONE ‘UNITY’ BET FOR PRESIDENT

By ROGER M. BA;ANZA

Former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. could face a single foe on May 9 in the race to Malacanang if plans by his opponents to support the strongest candidate pushes through.

According to Barry Gutierrez, spokesman of Leni Robredo, who is running second in pre-poll surveys against frontrunner Marcos , the vice president is open to a unity ticket among the presidential aspirants.

Aside from Marcos and Robredo, the others running for president are Manila Mayor Usko Moreno, Senator Ping Lacson and Senator Manny Pacquiao.

According to Gutierrez, the days to Election Day on May 9 ” is still an eternity in Philippine politics so a lot of things can happen,”

The current effort to unite the presidential aspirants, is a follow through move to a failed attempt by Robredo who met with Lacson, Pacquiao and Moreno to discuss fielding the strongest mong them, lbefore the filing of the certificates of candidacy (COCs) in October last year.

Robredo failed in her unification effort as all of them filed their respective COCs to pursue separate presidential bids.

Interviewed on Thursday, March 24, by ANC, Gutierres said “there are groups who have been continuously working since last year after the filing of candidacies in October, to still try and bring together candidates from different groups to form a broader alliance, trying to unite them under one tent, in under one banner. So these are ongoing efforts.”

“The Vice President has always been very, very clear, she is open to having conversations…and 45 days is still an eternity in Philippine politics so a lot of things can happen,” he added.
