President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday, February 4, defended the legality of the acquisition by his friend Davao City businessman Dennis Uy of shares in the Malampaya gas field.

Duterte also vouched for the aintegrity of Energy secretary Alfonso Cusi who approved the deal.
“I have seen the report on the sale and purchase of the stock of Chevron Malampaya LLC. Based on this, I am convinced that this was a private transaction between private entities that must be respected,” said Duterte in a statement issued by Malacañang.
In the deal, Uy of Udenna Corporation, through subsidiary firm UC Malampaya Philippines bought Chevron’s 45% stake in the Malampaya gas field.
The Palace issued the statement after the Senate submitted to the Ombudsman a resolution calling for criminal and administrative charges to be filed against Cusi.
