Hours after resigning from her regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on Thursday joined the Lakas Christian-Muslim-Democrats (Lakas-CMD) party of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Sara, a potential candidate for the presidency in the 2022 election, has taken her oath as a member of the (Lakas-CMD party, House Majority Leader and Leyte Rep. Martin G. Romualdez, president of the party, said in a statement.
“We had long been inviting Mayor Inday to join our party as we are all impressed with her sterling qualities as a leader and we saw up close her exemplary work ethics as chief executive of Davao City,” said Romualdez, who presided over the oath-taking ceremony in Cavite province on Thursday night
Lakas-CMD party chairman Senator Bong Revilla, was among witnesses of the oath-taking at the Revilla Farm in Silang, Cavite.
Lakas-CMD chaired by Arroyo, has produced two Philippine presidents: Fidel V. Ramos and Arroyo.
Sara and Arroyo played power brokers in 2018 when they locked hands in the ouster of then House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez and the installment of then Rep.Arroyo as Speaker.
If Sara decides to run in 2022, she could replace a candidate of the Lakas-CMD who has already filed at Comelec a Certificate of Candidacy (COC) on or before November 15, the deadline for substitution of candidates.
The Lakas-CMD has fielded its executive director Anna Capela Velasco and member Lyle Fernando Uy as presidential and vice presidential candidates.
