The administration party PDP-Laban was likely to field Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go for president and incumbent President Rodrigo Duterte for vice president in the 2022 national election, an official of the ruling party chaired by Duterte said.
According to lawyer Melvin Matibag, PDP-Laban Secretary-General, however, Go and Duterte will have to get the endorsement of the party members during a national convention set early next month.
The Go-Duterte tandem, Manubag said, was raised during a meeting of the PDP-Laban National Executive Committee (NEC) held on Wednesday. August 4.
The president’s bid was expected not to meet any opposition. Go is also not likely to be opposed.
Duterte, himself, said in March that he wants Go to run for president.
To be left in the cold in the PDP-Laban bench is presidential daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.
Mayor Duterte, who has emerged far ahead of other bets in latest surveys for presidential preference, is chair and founder of the Davao Region-based regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HnP).
Mayor Duterte has yet to decide if she would take a crack at the presidency. If she runs, it is not certain if she would carry the banner of the PDP-Laban.
The ruling party has already decided to field an all-PDP-Laban slate including the 12 bets in the Senate race in the national election next year..
