A dash to Malacanang in the 2022 presidential election remains an option for Vice President Leni Robredo, according to her spokesman who also refuted the claim of former Sen. Antonio Trillanes that the opposition leader is preparing to run for governor in Camarines Sur.
According to Barry Gutierrez, Robredo is still open to run for president in next year’s polls.
If she takes a crack at the presidency, Robredo will carry the banner of the opposition coalition 1Sambayan, against the candidate of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilpino/Lakas ng Bayan (PDP/Laban) of President Rodrigo Duterte, whose term ends in 2022.
Robredo’s potential nemesis for the top post is presidential daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, who has topped all pre-poll surveys for presidential preference for the coming election.
“There is absolutely no truth to the claim that she is making ‘preparations’ to run for governor of Camarines Sur,” Gutierrez said,
“This is not the time for politicking, but for working for the people’s welfare,” said Gutierrez, who adds that Robredo will announce her future political plans at the proper time.
Earlier on Wednesday, Trillanes in a statement bared his plan to run for president, claiming that Robredo is preparing to run for Camarines Sur governor.
With Robredo out of the race to Malaanang, Trillanes said that his Magdalo group will push him as the presidential candidate of the opposition coalition 1Sambayan as an alternative to Robredo.
