For terminating Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with US

Some officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) sympathetic to the United States are now talking about ousting President Rodrigo Duterte after the Philippine government terminated the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the American government, claims Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founder Jose Maria “Joma” Sison.
Sison said a number of the military officials were “assets” of the US Defense Intelligence Agency and Central Intelligence Agency.
Duterte approved the sending of the notice of termination of the two-decades-old military pact with US last week. The termination becomes effective 180 days after the US government received the notice.
Pentagon already received the notice, US Defense Secretary Mark Esper, said in a statement.
“Just by giving the notice of terminating VFA, he has aroused quite a number of pro-US military officers to talk against him and curse him for prejudicing hundreds of projects under the VFA, Sison said.
“Some of these officers have been talking about a coup,” Sison, from his exile in The Netherlands, said on Saturday.
Sison, however, said Duterte could abort the coup d’etat if he would also scrap all military agreements with the US, including the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT), and the Mutual Logistics and Support Agreement (MLSA).
“For him to do so and counter any coup threat from pro-US military officers, he would need to invoke national sovereignty and at the same time, complement this with highly patriotic and progressive social, economic and political reforms to get solid support from the people,” Sison said. Also Read:
