Former House Speaker Prospero Nograles dies

Former House Speaker Prospero Nograles Jr died on Saturday, May 4. He was 71.

Nograles had a lingering illness and had been mostly out of the public eye.

He represented Davao City’s First District in the House of Representatives and became House Speaker during the presidency of then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Nograles for more than two decades had locked in stiff political rivalry with then Mayor now President Rodrigo Duterte.

While Nograles was outstanding as the first Dabawenyo to be voted as House Speaker, his local battles to capture City Hall were failures. He lost in three mayoral races: in 1992 against Duterte, in 1998 against Duterte-backed Benjamin de Guzman and in 2010 to Duterte’s daughter now Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.

Nograles ended his rift with Duterte in 2017, by apologizing to the President for their past political rivalry.

Nograles, known to friends as “Boy” or “Nogie,” was born on October 30, 1947.

He attended elementary and high school at Ateneo de Davao, and finished his bachelor’s degree in Political Science at the Ateneo de Manila University in 1967. He graduated from the Ateneo Law School in 1971 and placed second in the 1971 Bar examinations.
