Ex-Speaker Davao del Norte Representative Pantaleon Alvarez has publicly admitted that  2nd District Rep. Antonio Floirendo Jr. and former Governor Rodolfo del Rosario bankrolled his election campaign to win his seat in Congress in the 2016 elections.

Despite the political debt, Alvarez, who won the 2016 contest after losing in two previous elections, is now fighting his former benefactors in the 2019 mid-term elections.

The betrayal, which led critics aware of his old political ties with Floirendo and the del Rosarios to describe Alvarez as a “snake in the grass,” will be a major issue against the ex-Speaker who was ousted and replaced by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in a coup in July.

Alvarez made the admission of owing a debt of gratitude to Floirendo and the del Rosarios in a report aired on ABS/CBN’s afternoon TV Patrol news program on Wednesday, September 26.

Alvarez apparently easily forgets his political debt, that included support of the Floirendo-Del Rosario political machinery. He also did not give value to the fact that Floirendo is a long-time friend.

All because of a public quarrel between their girlfriends.

Alvarez, during his short-lived stint as Speaker, hounded Floirendo with a graft rap at the Ombudsman involving the Floirendo-owned Tagum Agricultural Development Company (TADECO).

Alvarez also initiated a House inquiry into TADECO’s Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) with the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) covering the reservation area of the Davao Penal Colony (Dapecol).

On top of this, Alvarez who is seeking reelection in the 2019 mid-term polls, also accused Rodolfo Del Rosario, a former governor and congressman,  and his son incumbent Governor Anthony del Rosario of allegedly failing to bring economic development to Davao del Norte in their decades of rule.

Since breaking ties in middle of 2016 with Floirendo, Alvarez has launched a propaganda war in media against his former and political alliesbenefactors.

Alvarez’s protracted war against the Floirendo and the del Rosarios has lured Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.

Duterte-Carpio has vowed to campaign against Alvarez for calling as an opposition party, the Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), a regional party she organized with the governors of the Davao Region. Floirendo and the del Rosarios are members of the HNP.

Alvarez has organized a ragtag slate under the Alvarez Wing, a local bloc he formed under the PDP/Laban.

He is fielding a virtual unknown, contractor Edwin Jubabid, against reelectionist Gov. del Rosario; Vice Governor Alan Dujali against Floirendo and twice-defeated Tagum City mayor Rey Uy in the vice gubernatorial race.

Alvarez’s reelection will be challenged by Rodolfo del Rosario.
