In Davao del Norte, there is no debate over the fact that the Floirendos and the Del Rosarios have strong and unquestionable influence over the province’s political landscape.
The torch of that political dominance — initially given muscle decades ago by the late Don Antonio “White Hair” Floirendo Sr., founder of the giant banana producer and exporter TADECO, and brother-in-law Rodolfo “Dolfo” del Rosario— are being held today by Second District Rep. Antonio “Tonyboy” Floirendo Jr., son of White Hair, and Governor Anthony G. “AGR” del Rosario, son of former governor Dolfo.
Like White Hair and Dolfo, Tonyboy and AGR are today considered as the “political kingpins” of Davao del Norte.
It is a given that, due to their influence and dominance of Davao del Norte’s politics, no one would dare to engage them in a political battle.
Except, House Speaker and First District Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez.
Alvarez, secretary general of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino/Lakas ng Bayan (PDP/Laban) is challenging that dominance by organizing his own political bloc, Alvarez Wing, for the coming 2019 mid-term election.
He will be defending his reelection against come-backing Dolfo.
Alvarez is also fielding against Tonyboy, Vice Governor Allan Dujali, who like him owed their political life to the Floirendo-Del Rosario combine. Alvarez has broken ties with the Floirendos and Del Rosarios, once his political allies who bankrolled his past electoral battles, and is now fighting his former benefactors.
Without a candidate to pick against AGR, Alvarez is grooming an unknown to battle it out with the governor: Edwin Jubahib.
Who is EDWIN JUBAHIB?
