The selection of veteran Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III as new Senate president is “long overdue”, Special Assistant to the President (SAP) Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go said Tuesday.
“I welcome the new Senate President, Senator Sotto. He is a veteran senator, well-respected as Majority Floor Leader. A notch higher is the Senate President. It is long overdue for him to be the Senate President,” Go said in a media interview.
Unlike his predecessor, former Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, Sotto is not a member of the ruling political party, Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).
Go, however, expressed confidence that the new Senate leader will support the good programs of President Rodrigo Duterte.
“Senator Sotto is very supportive of our President’s program and I know that he will support him if he knows that this is good and that they have coalitions in the Senate that support the President’s program,” Go said.
Go assured that the President will not interfere in the operations of the Senate just like what he did under the leadership of Pimentel.
“We are confident of Senator Sotto as the new president of the Senate. He is good, respectable and with integrity,” he said.
Go is being eyed as one of the possible senatorial candidates of the administration in the 2019 midterm elections.
Despite calls from various groups and big personalities including Duterte for him to run, Go has said it is still too early to talk about politics. (PNA)
