Results of May 14 election a preview to 2019 mid-term polls
Ninety percent of candidates backed by House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez suffered debacles in the synchronized May 14 Barangay/Sanggunniang Kabataan (SK) elections in Davao del Norte.
The wholesale loss is a big slap on Alvarez who promised the candidates campaign funds from the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino/Lakas ng Bayan (PDP/Laban); and the PDP/Laban Alvarez Wing and Team Aldu, the political machineries of the Speaker.
Alvarez, the secretary general of PDP/Laban, has organized Alvarez Wing, his own personal political machinery for the 2019 mid-term elections.
Team Aldu, carrying the first two letters of the names of Alvarez and Vice Governor Alan Dujali, is another political machinery formed by the Speaker with Dujali, Alvarez’s candidate in the gubernatorial race in the 2019 election against incumbent Governor Anthony del Rosario.
The mass slaughter incumbent barangay captains and councilmen seeking reelection under the Alvarez banner.
Despite the non-partisanship of the Barangay/SK polls, the Alvarez Wing and Team Aldu were visible in the campaign and fielded its own candidates in the First District and Second District, the congressional district of Rep. Antonio Floirendo Jr.
Days before the election, Alvarez gathered barangay captains and councilmen from the two political districts in an assembly where he promised campaign funds and P2 million in projects to barangays where the Alvarez Wing/Team Aldu candidates would win.
A group sees the Alvarez stunt as a violation of the Omnibus Election Code and is filing a charge of vote-buying against the Speaker with the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Reports had it that the Alvarez Wing/Team Aldu candidates suffered a sweeping defeat because Alvarez did not deliver the campaign funds he promised.
The results of the May 14 election is a preview to the 2019 mid-term polls and the sweeping defeat of the Alvarez-backed candidates comes as an ominous sign for the Speaker’s reelection bid in the First District congressional race in 2019.
The 2019 mid-term election was expected to be a showdown between Alvarez and the group of Rep. Floirendo and his cousin, Gov. del Rosario, who has pitched camp with the Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HnP), a regional party organized by Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte, along with the five governors of the Davao Region.
HnP is reportedly fielding a region-wide slate against the PDP/Laban – Alvarez Wing in the coming 2019 polls.
Reports have it that the HnP has lured former Governor Rodolfo del Rosario, father of Gov. del Rosario, to come out of political retirement to contest the reelection bid of Alvarez.
