Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has closed the door to running for a seat in the Senate in 2019, saying she would rather continue to serve her city as mayor.
The presidential daughter shoot down a Senate bid during her visit in Cebu City on Friday.
At the Zapatera Elementary School, Duterte-Carpio distributed gift packs to students and their parents.
More than 1,000 people from the barangays of Lorega San Miguel and Zapatera attended the event.
The students, numbering about 500, received gift packs consisting of school supplies, including Barbie dolls for the female studes; the parents, also about 500, were given family planning brochures and condoms.
In a letter accompanying the gifts to the students is a call for the students to be serious in their studies and to respect and listen to their parents and teachers. In a separate letter, parents were urged to practice family planing.
In her speech at the gift-giving event, Duterte-Carpio said she is campaigning for smaller families so that parents can provide food and education to their children.
Duterte-Carpio is being pushed by some sectors to take a crack at the Senate, under the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP), the party of her father, President Rodrigo Duterte.
But the mayor said she has no plans to run for a Senate seat in 2019, adding that she would rather remain as Davao City mayor if she would continue to be in politics.
Duterte-Carpio said she is seeking accreditation by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) of Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HnP), a regional party she has organized together with governors five provinces in the Davao Region.(With SunStar Cebu report)
