They must be evicted, said Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte of farmers occupying a 20-hectare lot for the proposed P8.2 billion Davao City Sports Complex in the University of the Philippines in Mindanao (UP-Min) campus.

Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte, his son, said ejecting the farmers would be unfair.

upmin2The vice mayor said the farmers who had tilled the land for decades should be allowed to stay or be resettled.

But Mayor Duterte wants them out.

They should leave or I will myself demolish their houses, said Mayor Duterte in a report in Sunstar Davao. This is for the education of children, he said.

Duterte said he doubts that the farmers have title to the land.

Congress had approved a P200M initial funding for the project under the 2015 national budget.

Duterte said the government would not be spending for the relocation of the farmers.

He said the farmers must look for relocation sites themselves.

The land claim by the farmers is the most ticklish issue posing a stumbling block to the proposed sports complex whose approval had been temporarily stalled by the Davao City Council which is deliberating on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between City Hall and UP-Min on the project.

Earlier in 1979, Mayor Duterte and UP-Min signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on the sports complex.
