Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has  “declared” he would run for president in 2016, on one condition.

He has to have Agusan del Norte Governor Ma. Angelica Rosedell Amante-Matba as his First Lady.

I will run for president if my First Lady comes from Cabadbaran, joked Duterte at a recent gathering in Davao City. The governor’s hometown is Cabadbaran.

Duterte’s jest drew thunderous laughter and cheers from some 700 provincial officials and employees of Agusan del Norte led by Governor Amante-Matba who gathered for their “Family Day” at the Waterfront Insular Hotel in Davao City.

The governor is a long-time friend of the Davao City mayor. Duterte is legally separated from wife, Elizabeth Zimmerman.

Duterte was the guest of honor in the out-of-town fellowship organized by the governor and also attended by Vice Governor Rambu Bungabong.

Duterte was introduced before the guests as  a “Cabadbaranon by heart.”

The Amantes’ are from Cabadbaran, where Duterte’s mother, the late Soledad “Nanay Soling” Duterte, taught for a while in the 50s before she and her husband, the late Vicente Duterte, migrated to Davao City. Vicente Duterte would later become Governor of the then undivided Davao Province.

In his talk, the mayor welcomed the Agusan del Norte people. But he could not escape from talking about reports of his running for President.

He sparked laughter by saying he wants their governor to be his First Lady.

Seriously, however, Suterte said that he is not running for the top post in 2016, adding that he would introduce drastic reforms that many would not like if he is President.(Rural Urban News/Cha Monforte)

Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago said she is pushing through with her plan to run for president in 2016 and has picked a running mate she said she had “loved from the very beginning.”

But Santiago rued that the object of her love, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, has not expressed interest in running for a higher position.

“I am considering Duterte in my opium dreams,” she said in jest.

Reacting, Duterte said he was flattered and honored by Santiago’s offer but said that he is not running for a higher position in the coming elections.

“I would love to run with Duterte whom I have always loved from the very beginning,” Santiago said at a press briefing in Manila.

Santiago however qualified her plans to run for the presidency on her health status. She is suffering from lung cancer. She said she would push through with her presidential run if she is healed before the elections.

Santiago said Duterte would be an excellent vice president and would be effective in fighting criminality and corruption.

Santiago, who can no longer run for a Senate seat in 2016, said seeking the presidency is among her options.

Aside from Duterte, Santiago said she would also be comfortable to have as running mate former Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro or Senator Grace Poe.

duterte for presidentOffer turned down

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is running for president in the 2016 elections, the reason why he politely dumped Senator Miriam Santiago’s offer to be her running mate.

Duterte has turned down the offer.

“I’m really flattered, honored by the declaration of Senator Santiago but unfortunately I said I am not good for national office,” Duterte said reiterating his previous oft-repeated statement that he is not interested in running for a higher office.

But a people’s movement hoping to convince Duterte to tun for president reads a message in Duterte spurning Santiago’s offer.

We believe that we have convinced him that the country needed his leadership and that he is going to run for president in 2016, said a key leader of the Duterte Pilipinas 2016 Movement.

The movement wants Duterte to run for president and claims to have already gathered 10 million signatures in a nationwide campaign.

The movement organized by Davao City village chairmen hopes that the strong support as amplified in the signature campaign for Duterte to run for president would help convince the mayor to change his mind.
