FOR MAYOR RODY DUTERTE, Valentine’s Day is children with cancer day
BY ROGER M. BALANZA
Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said he spent Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2013, with ‘people in pain’ to bring them smile.
He was referring to children suffering from cancer staying at the House of Hope at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC).
The House of Hope has become a focus iof special attention for the vice mayor, leading fundraisers to keep the two-year old project moving.
The House of Hope has several dozen young cancer victims coming from all over Mindanao.
It’s good to bring smiles to those who are suffering, said Duterte at the Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa television program on ABS/CBN on Sunday. He said he enjoyed time playing with the young cancer patients and giving them gifts.
Visiting the cancer patients on Valentine’s Day, and Christmas, has become an annual ritual for Duterte, who has also donated a house in Margarita Village near SPMC. The house serves as a rehabilitation center for the kids, with SPMC lacking bigger space for the children and their parents and guardians to stay.
Duterte said he also spent the day of the hearts with his young daughter, Kitty. Duterte, separated from wife Elizabeth, said he had no ‘special’ someone to mark Valentine’s Day.
I had all the fun and glory. I had a sack-full of love in the past but now it has dwindled to a small plastic bag, he jested in the program hosted by lawyer broadcast journalist Geraldine Tiu.
