KEITH BACONGCO’S Sara Punch
BY ROGER M. BALANZA
The father worried of the daughter mauling another court sheriff? Mora gyod!
To abort a similar grim incident, Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has gone to Soliman in Agdao where last year his daughter Mayor Sara Duterte manhandled a court sheriff supervising a court-ordered demolition of about 200 urban poor shanties standing on a private property.
The demolition order, following the incident, has been scuttled temporarily, but another one is coming.
Apparently trying to avoid a repeat of the incident involving her daughter and court sheriff Abe Andres, Duterte said he met last week with the settlers to convince them not to resist another demolition, which is inevitable and could happen any day.
The Regional Trial Court has ruled in a final decision that the settlers must go.
Duterte said he went to the “scene-of-the-crime” of his daughter’s fury and told the settlers that he and Mayor Duterte may no longer be able to help them as they would risk being slapped with contempt of court if they intervene, the court decision being final.
I told them that we must follow the law and avoid any breakdown of violence, he said in the Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa television program on ABS/CBN on Sunday.
He said that he assured that the government would help them in their relocation.
Legally, the settlers lost their case, said the vice mayor.
Last year, Mayor Duterte rushed up to Soliman where the settlers were in a violent mood to stop the demolition.
She pleaded with court sheriff Andres to give her two hours to secure a stay order from the court but the sheriff refused and ordered the demolition to proceed.
Angered, Mayor Duterte mauled Andres.
The scene captured on video by local television news crews was widely played up in national and international news, gaining both praise and censure for the young mayor .
Mayor Duterte due to the mauling incident faced charges before the Ombudsman, the Supreme Court (the mayor is a lawyer) and the Departrment of Interior and Local Government.
