DENR, LGUs kick off 2010 Biodiversity Year

Koronadal City — To get the 2010 Biodiversity Year celebration underway, the Department of Natural Resources Regional Office 12 (DENR XII), its provincial offices, and the Local Government Units (LGUs) in South Cotabato carried out a greening activity in Sitio Glandang, Barangay (village) Kablon, Tupi.

Some 80 personnel of DENR XII and South Cotabato Provincial Environment and Natural Resources (PENRO), the Provincial Enviroment and Management Office (PEMO), and LGU partners planted more than 2,000 seedlings of various tree species in the sub-village.

During the launching program, Musa C. Saruang, regional technical director for Protected Areas Wildlife and Coastal Zone Management Service (PAWCZMS), said “the ecosystem should be protected and not abused.

“We should make sure that sustainable practices are undertaken,” he added.

He also stressed the importance of unity and cooperation among the local residents for the preservation of biodiversity and safeguarding the benefits it provides.

“DENR is willing to support community projects on biodiversity conservation, however, it is up to the community to work hard towards the protection and development of your environment,” he said.

PENR Officer Mama Samaon emphasized that a multi – sectoral participation is crucial in the development and management of our environment and natural resources.

“DENR alone cannot do all the environmental activities. It is everyone’s obligation to defend and to make our environment productive,” Samaon said.

The declaration of 2010 as the National Year of Biodiversity was mandated under Presidential Proclamation No. 2003.

It aimed, among others, to increase awareness on the importance of biodiversity by promoting actions at the national, regional and local levels. (DENR/PIA 12)
